On Friday, police officers and firefighters who have died in the line of duty in the past year will be honored in a ceremony for Fallen Heroes Day. The commemoration pays tribute to all types of public safety officers – police, correctional officers, firefighters, and emergency rescue personnel.
One of the officers honored this weekend is Maryland State Trooper First Class Wesley Brown, who was killed last June –fatally shot while working an off-duty security detail at an Applebee’s restaurant. Trooper Brown was a resident of Prince George’s County. He started a mentoring program there called Young Men Enlightening Younger Men. Wesley’s brother, Sylvester, a paralegal, now helps oversee the organization.
Sheilah speaks with Sylvester, along with Shaquille Jones and Deshaun Bryant, two young men involved with the program.
The 2011 Fallen Heroes Day ceremony will also honor Sergeant Hector Ayala, Montgomery County Police, Baltimore Police Officer James Fowler III, Baltimore Police Officer Thomas Portz, Jr., Baltimore Police Officer William Torbit, Jr., and Firefighter/Paramedic Mark Falkenhan.
The ceremony will take place on Friday at 1 pm at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
