Marylander in a Burmese Jail Update: Nov. 13 Trial

November 20, 2009 at 5:09 pm 1 comment

There was another hearing last Friday in the case of Kyaw Zaw Lwin, the Burmese-born U.S. citizen and Maryland resident currently in jail in Burma. In the hearing, two new charges that had been announced the previous week were spelled out. These charges were added when the case was moved mid-trial to a higher-level court.  A U.S. consular official present at the hearing last Friday reported that the new charges are: Kyaw Zaw Lwin failed to declare currency of over $2,000 when he entered Burma on September 3rd, and that he brought kyat–Burmese currency–into the country illegally.

Aside from the trial, Wa Wa Kyaw, Kyaw Zaw Lwin’s fiancee, told Maryland Morning that two aunts who had been allowed to visit Kyaw Zaw Lwin in prison during Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell’s trip to the country earlier this month were not allowed to visit him when they tried to this week.

The next hearing in the case was today; we’ll have an update here once we have news.
