Marylander in a Burmese Jail: 12-11 Hearing Canceled

Earlier this morning we talked with U Kyi Win, one of Kyaw Zaw Lwin’s Burmese lawyers. He said today’s scheduled hearing in the case did not happen. When the legal team arrived at the prison where the trial is taking place, the judge told them there would not be a hearing today because Kyaw Zaw Lwin is “not well,” U Kyi Win said.

U Kyi Win said a U.S. consular official immediately went to the superintendent of jails to request access to Kyaw Zaw Lwin.  The State Department has not yet told Maryland Morning whether or not the official was able to gain access; the Myanmar government did not grant such access when similar requests were made earlier this week.

Yesterday, the Bangkok-based magazine The Nation published an op-ed written by Wa Wa Kyaw, Kyaw Zaw Lwin’s fiancee (a Gaithersburg resident). “Nyi Nyi’s arrest, detention and treatment has been condemned by the United States and the international community,” she writes, using Kyaw Zaw Lwin’s family name, “and so I say: your words show you take this issue seriously: But what will you do?”

And the Democratic Voice of Burma published two articles today that mention Kyaw Zaw Lwin: one about Wa Wa Kyaw’s op-ed, the other about a collaboration between the British government and several human rights organziations aiming to raise awareness about the situation of Burmese political prisoners.

Maryland Morning will have a full update on Kyaw Zaw Lwin’s case on  Monday’s program.
