Conversation originally aired April 8, 2009.

The credibility of a news organization depends on accuracy, and for this, copy editors are essential. They’re the last ones to see stories before they reach our eyes. As newspapers downsize, there are fewer copy editors to catch mistakes. University of Maryland journalism professor Carl Sessions Stepp wrote about the impact of those cutbacks in May-June issue of American Journalism Review. Earlier this year, he and John McIntyre, then The Baltimore Sun’s Copy Desk Chief, talked with us about the crucial role of copy editing. The Baltimore Sun laid McIntyre off a little less than a month after this piece originally aired.
