3-31-10: Bealefeld on the Beat

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s preliminary budget shines a spotlight on what the Baltimore police department does and what resources it needs to do it. In the first public hearing on the mayor’s budget last week, Police Commissioner Bealefeld told her that cutting $16 million from his budget would mean laying off 200 officers, including cops on beats.  He said it would destroy years of progress in cutting homicides and violent crime. All this makes setting priorities even more important. So we’re bringing you more from the conversation we had with Commissioner Bealefeld a few weeks ago, before the preliminary budget.
