R.I.P. David Mills

Journalist, Wire and Treme writer, and music hound David Mills died in New Orleans Tuesday. He was 48.

Mills worked on the University of Maryland’s college paper, The Diamondback, where he met David Simon. Mills wrote for the Washington Post for a while, but then teamed up with Simon on Homicide, The Corner, The Wire, and Treme. Remembrances are popping up everywhere. Read a couple.

Over to the right, on our blogroll, is a link to the blog “Undercover Black Man.” That was Mills, too. He turned his readership on to a lot of good music, and his hilarious, provocative, and warm-hearted writing about race and culture somehow turned a series of disagreements into a community.

I just wanted to share a personal note about David. I interviewed him a couple years back while I was writing about the fifth season of The Wire. He was a blast to talk to, and he was just as interested in what I–a rookie journalist–had to say as he was to talk about all of his own interesting work.

He even talked me into sending him some writing I’d done about a reporting trip to New Orleans. He read every word, gave me feedback, and continued to check out my later work. We kept in touch here and there, although I never got to meet him in person. I hope he realized how much I enjoyed corresponding with him and that his feedback made me more enthusiastic about writing.

Treme premieres on April 11. It’s a very sad thing that David Mills won’t get to see it.
