7-19-10: Brenda Donald and Maryland’s Safety Net

The Maryland Department of Human Resources looks after much of Maryland’s safety net: food stamps, foster care, child protection, and much more.
On June 25, Governor Martin O’Malley announced that DHR Secretary Brenda Donald would be joining the Annie E. Casey Foundation after “three years of reforms at the historically troubled agency.”
Friday is Secretary Donald’s last day. Today she stops by to tell Sheilah what troubles she inherited at DHR, what she’s done about them, and what challenges Maryland’s safety net faces going forward.
In December, Secretary Donald joined Sheilah to talk about delays in the administration of food stamps.
In May, Erin Sullivan, then the managing editor at City Paper, told Sheilah about her own reporting on Maryland’s safety net.
