2-21-11: Youth Unemployment

February 21, 2011 at 8:07 am Leave a comment

According to one analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data, 48 percent of black males between the ages 16 and 19 are unemployed. The unemployment rate for all teens is 27 percent. Another report says the teen job market has “collapsed” in the last ten years.

Harry Holzer, professor at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, was concerned enough about the problem to testify in front of Congress about it. George Liebmann, volunteer executive director of the Calvert Institute for Policy Research, says it’s “potential social dynamite.”

Sheilah talks to Holzer and Liebmann about what high youth unemployment means for the future of these young people, and for all of America.

Teacher and writer Michael Corbin wrote an op-ed about this problem for the Baltimore Sun in August.
