5-9-11: IHV and AIDS

The Institute of Human Virology, part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, has just been awarded its biggest research grant ever to develop and test a vaccine against HIV/AIDS. A consortium led by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is putting $23.4 million dollars into the effort.

Dr. Robert Gallo is the founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology.  In 1984, Dr. Gallo co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS, and subsequently pioneered the HIV blood test.  We talk with him this morning about his work.
