During the Civil War, many Union military hospitals had terrible shortages of bandages, socks, and bed coverings—such as quilts.  To help aid those hospitals, northern women stitched an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 quilts — by hand.

In 2004, a quilters’ guild in southern California decided they wanted to honor those who have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by sewing quilts for their surviving family members.  They created the quilts in the style of those long-ago covers from  the Civil War.  They called it the “Home of the Brave” project, and it spread to all 50 states, including Maryland.

One person who received such a quilt is Marie Moudry, who lives in Harford County.  The quilt was in honor of her son, Army Staff Sergeant Christopher Moudry, who died in Iraq in 2006.  Sheilah speaks with Marie Moudry, along with Sandi Carstensten, the national coordinator for the Home of the Brave project.

If you’re interested in getting involved with the Home of the Brave project, you can contact the Maryland coordinator, Trish Geesaman, by email:  pjg318@comcast.net.

Marie Moudry's Home of the Brave quilt has a patch on the back dedicating it to her son, Christopher Moudry, who died in Iraq in 2006.

Some of the quilters write notes to Ms. Moudry on individual squares.
