If you think “In the Ghetto” when you think of crime in the metropolis, a new Brookings Institution report might change your tune.
Despite the increase in urban poverty and its rapid expansion into the suburbs, the report found that crime is down in the suburbs, down sharply in the cities, and up…in the exurbs (…in the exurrrrbs).
Elizabeth Kneebone is the co-author of “City and Suburban Crime Trends in Metropolitan America.” She tells Sheilah what the research shows about Baltimore, and about the policy implications of having metropolitan areas whose suburban and urban crime rates are falling together.
