6-1-11: Liane Hansen on the Eastern Shore

June 1, 2011 at 8:00 am 3 comments

NPR host Liane Hansen  gets to sleep in next Sunday morning.

Probably great for her … not so much for the rest of us, who have counted on her as our Sunday morning guide, muse and friendly observer of what’s new in the world.  Last Sunday she wrapped up more than 21 years hosting Weekend Edition Sunday.    She plans to retire to the Eastern Shore … a few miles north of the Maryland line.

Sheilah caught up with Liane at NPR’s studio last week, a few days before her last time hosting Weekend Edition.

FYI Sheilah: Bethany Beach is not on the Eastern Shore (of Maryland). It’s in Delaware.

Merriam-Webster says that the “eastern shore” designation is “sometimes considered to include Delaware.” Of course, Delaware’s only got the one shore…

Tom Hall of WYPR’s Maryland Morning suggested this story was an “Eastern Shore” item! Hardly. The Eastern Shore’s last name is “of Maryland.” And Lianne Hansen is not of Maryland and neither is Bethany Beach, Delaware. Geography matters.
