7-4-11: Red State, Blue State–Um, Gimme Ten More Colors, Please

The 4th of July is a good time for America to once again ask…”Who are we?” For much of the last decade, we were often told that who we were was all about living in a Red State or a Blue State.

In their book Our Patchwork Nation: The Surprising Truth About the Real AmericaThe 12 Community Types That Make Up Our Nation, journalist Dante Chinni and University of Maryland government professor Jim Gimpel go for a little more nuance in telling us who we are…but not so much that we can’t find labels that reveal the nature of the voting blocs and local economies that make up our nation.

Chinni and Gimpel join Sheilah from the campus of the University of Maryland College Park.
