7-13-11: Taking a Cue From Hemingway
It may be 9 o’clock now, but it’s 5 pm somewhere in the world. Have a summer afternoon in the style of Hemingway and Fitzgerald by making a cocktail. Our resident foodie Sascha Wolhandler, of Sascha’s 527, has some twists on the classics.
Strawberry Jalapeno Basil Margarita
4 basil leaves
1/2 chopped jalapeno ( no seeds)
2 ounces fresh lime juice
2 ounces of tequila
Good splash of grand marnier or triple sec
Simple syrup to taste
Muddle strawberries, basil and jalapeno. Mix lime juice, tequila, grand marnier, simple syrup muddled mixture, with ice in cocktail shaker. Shake and then strain over fresh ice.
2 ounces Vodka (can be flavored or plain)
1 ounce of triple sec
1 cup frozen water melon chunks
Squeeze of lime
Puree the frozen watermelon chunks. Combine watermelon puree with rest of ingredients in a cocktail shaker. shake with ice and strain into martini glass.
2 ripe peaches
Champagne or sparkling wine
Muddle peaches and place in refrigerator to chill for 1 hour. Place in a champagne flute, and add champagne.
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of water
Combine and bring to boil, then simmer until sugar is dissolved.
Peach Old Fashioned
add 1 tsp of brown sugar
splash of bitters
1/4 cup of rye
Muddle peache and sugar. Add ice, bitters, and rye.
Home-made Raspberry Vodka
1-2 cups fresh raspberries
1 bottle cheap vodka
1/2 cup sugar
Cook on low heat for 3-4 hours. Let sit over night, strain the next day, and pour it into your vodka bottle.
2 cups blueberries
2 ounces rum (for each drink)
Puree 2 cups of blueberries in blender. Strain. Cut limes into thin wedges Muddle two limes. Muddle with some mint and sugar (left in crystals). Mix with 2 ounces of rum and a touch of club soda.
