7-26-11: Summer of Mercy 2.0

Twenty summers ago, the debate over abortion in the United States changed.  For weeks during the summer of 1991 thousands of protesters gathered in Wichita, outside of the clinic where Dr. George Tiller and his staff performed abortions, including late-term abortion.  The organizers called it “the Summer of Mercy.”

Now, the organizer of those protests, Operation Rescue — along with the dioceses of Baltimore and Washington, the Maryland Coalition for Life, the Christian Defense Coalition and local churches – is planning  “Summer of Mercy 2.0.”  — This time in Germantown at the offices of abortion-provider Dr. LeRoy Carhart.

We’ll hear from Matt Schofield,a  Kansas City Star reporter who was in Wichita in 1991.  First, we got in touch with protesters on both sides of the debate that will start this weekend in Germantown. We talked with Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, and Kira Baughman, Director of Community Outreach and Case Manager AbortionClinics.Org and an organizer of Summer of Choice Celebration.
