This segment originally aired on November 19, 2010.

Earlier this year, a mystery magazine, The Strand, published a recently-found Dashiell Hammett short story — “So I Shot Him.”   It was Hammett’s stories that redefined the hard-boiled detective genre.   Baltimore writer Lauren Weiner brings us the Maryland backstory of the man behind the book, Dashiell Hammett.

Listen to the radio play of “The Maltese Falcon” and check out the University of Maryland’s special collection on Dashiell Hammett.
