8-24-11: “Heat It to Beat It”

This conversation originally aired May 17, 2010.

About a year ago, teacher and musician Alice Young was diagnosed with appendix cancer. She was referred to Dr. Armando Sardi, a surgical oncologist at Mercy Medical Center who specializes in abdominal cancers and who operated on Alice using a relatively new and unusual surgical technique in which liquid chemotherapy is poured directly into the abdomen during surgery. Alice Young joins Tom in the studio to talk about her experience with this rare form of cancer, along with Dr. Vadim Gushchin, a surgical oncologist who works with Dr. Sardi at the Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy.

On September 18, there will be a 2.8-mile fundraising walk at the Inner Harbor to raise money for Dr. Sardi’s research. Learn more at Heat It to Beat It.
