8-29-11: The De-Radicalization of Terrorists
This interview originally aired on July 13, 2010.
As we approach the anniversary of September 11th, we wanted to discuss different strategies for dealing with terrorism, and how, ten years after the largest-ever terrorist attack on US soil, we’re approaching the problem.
To start, we return to an interview from last July with Gary LaFree, director of the University of Maryland’s National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, or START. START published a report in which they examining how terrorists can be de-radicalized. They looked at prisoners in 15 countries, to learn what works and what elements could be applied elsewhere.
We talk with him about a START report that looks at de-radicalization programs around the world.
