This conversation originally aired September 13, 2010.

Earlier this month as part of our Baltimore City elections coverage, we looked at the candidates’ plans for crime. There are varying levels of support for current Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld and his strategy of focusing police resources on quote “bad guys with guns.”

It’s Commissioner Bealefeld’s job to help put away those “bad guys.” But when they finish their sentences, how do they become “good guys” again?

That’s Greg Carpenter’s job. He’s a mentoring coordinator and case manager at Jericho Reentry Program in East Baltimore. Sheilah talks to him about what ex-offenders need to succeed, and what makes people ready to pull a trigger in the first place.
