What’s the last board game you played?  Was your playing piece a top hat, or maybe a thimble?  Or did the game involve framing Mrs. White in the kitchen with the knife?  Maybe there was some sort of pop-o-matic bubble.  Whatever the game was, here in the U. S., the selection of board games available to a big audience tends to be on the smaller side.

A group in Baltimore wants to change that.  The Baltimore Tabletop Game Designers meets regularly to test out their new board game creations – or to improve upon the classics.  Two members of the group, Stephen Thomas and Brent Kim, join Sheilah to talk about what they’re working on — and how they hope to get it picked up.

They’ll be hosting a series of workshops on board game design through the Baltimore Free School — the first one is this Thursday, October 13.  The group also hosts a regular monthly meetup at the Windup Space in Baltimore.

Urban Farm Heroes is a game in which players try to succeed at running their own city garden plots. Brent Kim, its creator, works at Johns Hopkins’ Center for a Livable Future, for his day job.
