A new paper by professors at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health suggests that place, not race, is more important in deciding health disparities.

Joining us to talk about health disparities across the state and what factors into them are the lead researcher on that paper Dr. Thomas LaViest, director of the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions and William C. and Nancy F. Richardson Professor in Health Policy at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Carleissa Hussein, director of the Office of of Minority Health and Health Disparities in the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

We need to look at health disparities as more than differences between races or between blacks and whites. There is research to also suggest that there are health disparities affecting the LGBT community. Looking at health disparities as only a race issue excludes many other minority groups.
