Most people who’ve been to Maryland’s Eastern Shore are just passing through—catching glimpses of the marshes, boats, and bay through the car window en route to the beach.  The films of Doug Sadler are known for opening up that world – portraying the stories of the people we routinely drive by, as well as those who rely on the water for a living.

Sadler spent part of his teenage years living on a boat with his family in Easton.  As a young adult, he worked on films in California—but couldn’t get the Eastern Shore out of his head.   “I found myself in Los Angeles, and kept thinking about Maryland and the Eastern Shore. . . the romance of it even more magnified.”

So, Sadler returned to Maryland to portray that romance.  His first feature film, RIDERS, premiered in 2002, after which Filmmaker Magazine named him one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film.”  In 2005, his second film, SWIMMERS, was named Best New American Film at the Seattle International Film Festival.  Sadler went on to help found the Chesapeake Film Festival, and currently serves as its artistic director.  He now spends time in both Easton and New York, writing, developing film projects, and running an artist-driven advertising company called the Pocket Media Group.

You can check out his work here.

On Wednesday, November 30, at 7 pm, Doug Sadler will share stories of the Shore with WYPR’s Tom Hall in front of a live audience, at the Windup Space on Baltimore’s North Avenue.  We’ll screen clips of his films, and take audience questions.  The interview will be recorded to air on “Maryland Morning” on Friday, December 2, at 9:40 am.

You can listen to previous Screen Test interviews with filmmakers including Pierre and Jamyla Bennu, casting director Pat Moran, and Matt Porterfield here.
