12-2-11: A Marylander in Mumbai
Tomorrow, Governor O’Malley wraps a week-long trade mission to India. Joining him on the trip are more than 100 state officials, Maryland business owners, and academics—the largest delegation from any state to ever visit the country. It’s the Governor’s second international trip this year meant to promote Maryland business abroad — he was in China over the summer, and has said he would like to visit South and Central America before his second term is finished.
Critics say such trips may be a waste of taxpayer dollars — the state spent $144,000 to send the state delegation–the business owners paid their own way. We wanted to find out: are these overseas missions successful at creating business opportunities for Maryland companies? And how much investment in Maryland can we expect from Indian companies?
Sheilah talks about this with one of the people who’s part of that delegation: Bob Walker is the Assistant Secretary for Business and Enterprise development in Maryland. He also oversees International Operations for the Department of Business and Economic Development.
