12-16-11: It’s Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s the Higgs Boson! No…Wait…Maybe?
On New Year’s Day, just a couple weeks from now, many of us will stand on our bathroom scales, and vow to lose a little weight.
It’s worth taking some time to think about where that “weight” comes from. It’s a function of the force of gravity, and your body’s mass a mass that may soon be bolstered by that extra slice of pumpkin pie.
But why does mass exist? That’s a little tricky.
Scientists have a pretty good idea… but they’re still trying to prove their theory. And data out of the Center for Nuclear Research in Switzerland this week could get them a little closer.
Joining us to explain it all is experimental physicist Andrei Gritsan, who works out of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University.
