This segment originally aired on April 19, 2011.

All this week, we’re remembering Marylanders we lost in 2011.  One of them was Maryland Governor, state comptroller, and Baltimore mayor William Donald Schaefer.  He passed away in April in Catonsville, Maryland, at the age of 89.

Schaefer was known for a signature style that was impatient, tough, and humorous.  His accomplishments include the funding of the Baltimore Aquarium, helping to get Camden Yards built in downtown Baltimore, and pushing for legislation to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay.  He was famed for what he called his “do it now” approach to big infrastructure undertakings.

Sheilah speaks with  WYPR political analyst Fraser Smith, who wrote the book William Donald Schaefer: A Political Biography.  They talk with Laslo Boyd, who managed Schaefer’s campaign for state comptroller in 2006, Mark Wasserman, who served as his chief of staff when he was governor, and Ron Young, who served as mayor of Frederick when Schaefer was mayor of Baltimore.
