This conversation originally aired May 9, 2011. Earlier this year, the Institute of Human Virology, part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was awarded its biggest research grant ever to develop and test a vaccine against HIV/AIDS. A consortium led by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is putting $23.4 million dollars into the effort.

Robert Gallo is the founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology.  In 1984, Dr. Gallo co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS, and subsequently pioneered the HIV blood test.  Sheilah talks with Dr. Gallo about his work.
