It looks like the Baltimore Grand Prix will have an encore. Last Wednesday, the Baltimore City Board of Estimates voted 3 to 2 to approve a contract with Downforce Racing LLC. It calls for the newly-formed group to run the race through 2016.

Two months ago, the city canceled its contract with the original race organizers, Baltimore Racing Development. They had proved unable to pay about $1.5 million in outstanding fees and taxes.

The new contract waives some fees that the original organizers were required to pay, and keeps the race’s finances private. Today, we talk about the future of the race with Felix Dawson and Dan Reck, two of the principals of Downforce Racing LLC.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and her two appointees on the Board of Estimates voted for the contract. Here’s the mayor’s take on it, and a copy of the proposed contract. You can read about the opposition of Comptroller Joan Pratt and City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young at the Baltimore Brew.
