3-6-12: BGE’s Exelon Adventure

The proposed merger between energy giant Exelon and Constellation–the parent company of local utility BGE–is one step closer to reality. On February 17, the Maryland Public Service Commission announced its support of the merger–provided the deal meets 40 conditions.

The last hurdle is approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; their decision is expected in April.

Today, Sheilah discusses the PSC’s conditions for the deal with Maryland People’s Counsel Paula Carmody and Morningstar Inc. director of utilities research Travis Miller.

We invited PSC chairman Douglas Nazarian on the show to talk about the PSC’s approval of the merger. He declined through a spokesperson, who told us in an e-mail that “as a general rule, the Commission speaks through its orders (and press releases) regarding specific cases.”
