Sig Libowitz was a Movies Guy, through and through. He’d been mostly in New York and L.A., working as a studio exec, producing, writing and acting. Then he went to law school at the University of Maryland. In one of his classes, he became obsessed with legal proceedings at Guantanamo Bay. This was the frontier of American jurisprudence: there was no textbook, and very few relevant cases. At “Combatant Status Review Tribunals,” prisoners of the war on terror were not allowed lawyers, and they couldn’t see the evidence against them.
The Movies Guy emerged again. Libowitz dug through transcripts of these tribunals and came up with a courtroom drama that illustrates the defining American question of the 21st century–what balance are we willing to strike between national security and human rights? The law school signed on as executive producer, as did Venable, where Libowitz currently works as an attorney. The result is The Response, a thirty-minute drama that was shortlisted for an Academy Award.
On Wednesday, March 28, Maryland Morning arts and culture ace Tom Hall will talk with Sig Libowitz about his career in front of a live audience at The Windup Space. Then we’ll screen the The Response with an intermission for conversation, followed by an audience Q&A.
As always, the Screen Test is free and open to the public. Maryland Morning will air Tom’s conversation with Sig Libowitz on Friday, March 30.
The Maryland Morning Screen Test has been around for over a year and a half now! We’ve gotten to know the work of many talented Maryland filmmakers, such as Matt Porterfield, Pierre and Jamyla Bennu, Eric Dyer, and Catherine Pancake. You can check out the interviews from earlier Screen Tests–and see Christopher Moore’s wonderful photos of the events–here.
