Both Feet In is a a radio program, Word on the Street is a newspaper. They both feature the voices, writing and work of Baltimoreans without housing. We talk about homeless media in Baltimore with John Devecka, operations manager of WLOY (home of Both Feet In), Vanessa Borotz, assistant editor at Word on the Street and an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer who coordinates the Baltimore Faces of Homelessness Speakers Bureau, and Mark Schuman, editor of Word on the Street.
Web extra: “Homeless Hotspots” — Vanessa, Marc, and John react to a marketing agency’s hiring of homeless people in Austin, Texas, to serve as roving wi-fi hotspots during the South by Southwest festival:
Word on the Street is having a silent auction fundraiser at The Cork Gallery April 27 from 7 to 9pm:

How successful have either the radio station or newspaper been in raising awareness?

There have already been 3,000 papers sold and lots of downloads of past radio programs (Both Feet In has been on since 2010) so we feel that we are reaching people and raising awareness of these issues. Every step is a positive one. One of the biggest successes has been uniting so many different camps behind the paper so that we have a stronger voice. It is also nice to note that the paper sales have put over $2,000 into the pockets of current and formerly homeless vendors already! Thanks for listening!
