4-20-12: Around the Americas in 314 Days

Matt Rutherford aboard his boat, the Saint Brendan, as he arrives back in Annapolis.

It’s a 23,000 mile journey around both North and South America.  Maryland sailor Matt Rutherford has sailed them all–the first person make the trip on his own, without ever dropping anchor, going ashore, or having another person come aboard his boat the Saint Brendan.

Matt’s plan is to finish his journey tomorrow in Annapolis—stepping on land for the first time in ten months.  You can watch the homecoming live and read the blog Matt kept while on the trip at solotheamericas.org.  Or, if you feel like being there yourself, Matt will drop anchor at the National Sailing Hall of Fame dock at the end of City Dock, 67-69 Prince George Street, in Annapolis, tomorrow at noon.

Matt’s goal was to earn money for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (or CRAB).  You can still give to support Matt and CRAB at this link.

He just crossed into the Chesapeake Bay—and Matt talks with Sheilah by satellite from his boat.

I have to say this is just simply amazing because the ocean is not forgiving and will truly show you the wrath or the grace of God. I do believe this should be in the history books, it shows not everyone in this world is fighting or being lazy it shows there are people that still do what they love and aren’t letting this economy keep them from that.
