Dan Morhaim is a legislator, a doctor and an author. In his book The Better End: Surviving and Dying on Your Own Terms in Today’s Modern Medical World, he discusses end of life care and the importance of having an advanced directive to make your wishes known about how you would like to be cared for while dying.

We talk with Dr. Morhaim about his book and advanced directives.

    My experience with advanced directives has been with my parents. Both had expressed they did not want extraordinary measures. However, my sister and brother did not request the DNR on the chart and as a result, both parents experienced procedures which were painful, frightening and useless. My father had destroyed 95% of his heart prior to seeking help and my mother, at 85 yrs, bowel burst. I find it frightening that wishes can be denied by family
