Fela Kuti was a Nigerian musician and political activist who spoke out against the military dictatorships in that country, and on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised.  Afrobeat music, a style which Fela pioneered, continues to inspire generations of music lovers all over the world.  Afrobeat certainly inspired Stephen Hendel, whose reaction to Fela’s art led him to collaborate with the Tony Award winning director and choreographer Bill T. Jones to produce a musical about Fela.

Tom Hall interviews both Stephen Hendel and Bill T. Jones.  Fela! the musical, begins a six performance run at Morgan State University tomorrow through May 20.

Bill T. Jones is the Tony Award winning choreographer and director, and Steven Hendel is the lead producer of Fela!

Fela! opens tomorrow night at Morgan State University’s Murphy Fine Arts Center.
