Over the next week, more than a dozen colleges and universities in Maryland will graduate their students and send them off into the world.  Commencement ceremonies mean…commencement addresses.

It seems like the custom of speaking to the graduates has been around forever. Certainly, some of the speeches seem to go on forever. But some manage to leave an indelible mark on those who hear them, and even on our culture.

Today Sheilah talks about the history of commencement speeches with commencement expert Paula Youra, professor and chair of Lynchburg College’s communications studies department. We also hear from Liz Medcalf, who’s on the commencement committee at Frostburg State University in western Maryland, about why Frostburg has their students speak instead of the big shots.
